Pointe au Baril Community Members Partner with Habitat for Humanity

Pointe au Baril, ON – Members of the Pointe au Baril Islanders’ Association, local dignitaries, community members and Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North staff gathered at the donated lot on North Shore Rd. on Monday, August 13 to celebrate their fundraising achievements to date and officially announce the 2019 build project.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Pointe au Baril community, Islanders and locals, and commend the steering committee on their dedication and hard work to date,” said Kimberley Woodcock, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North. “We are grateful for the community support and the many volunteers whose commitment to Habitat’s mission has helped us empower families through affordable home ownership. Habitat homes provide families with the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better life.”

People living in Habitat homes not only help to build their own houses, they also pay affordable mortgages. Habitat for Humanity’s innovative approach helps working families on a new path to better, affordable living conditions that lead to improved health and stronger childhood development. Access to affordable home ownership can help decrease a family’s reliance on food banks and allow them to move out of social housing which frees up space for those on waiting lists.

“Donations are needed to get the build underway,” said Rob Muir, steering committee chair of the Pointe au Baril Adopt-A-Home Project. “Donations can be made in many ways. Cash, cheque or online donation to buy building materials, donations of service and materials that are integral to the home, and volunteering to help build all support the project.”

The building lot, development costs, and environmental assessment costs have been donated thanks to the Morels, the Township of the Archipelago and the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve, respectively. Local businesses have assisted with zoning, severance, fire safety and other related planning for the build as well as developing build plans, and erecting signage on the lot. To date, individual donations to the project are over $45,000 with a goal of $200,000 by spring 2019.
