Community Support Makes Affordable Homeownership a Reality in Parry Sound
Nancy Fournier (left) and Jason Robertson, managing owners of Northern Living Kitchen & Bath Ltd., designed kitchen layouts for both Habitat homes on Addie St. in addition to fully donating the kitchen materials and light fixtures and full installation of the cabinetry.
PARRY SOUND, ON – When construction started on the semi-detached homes on Addie Street in 2017, Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North (HFHOGN) was almost immediately contacted by Nancy Fournier from Northern Living Kitchen & Bath Ltd. (Northern Living) about partnering. The local Parry Sound business was interested first in supporting with at least a partial donation of kitchen cabinets to the project.
With time to review the design and prepare, the team at Northern Living not only sourced the materials for the kitchens but also revised the design, sourced light fixtures for both homes and assisted with the installation of the kitchens. The two homes are now almost complete with the personal touch of Northern Living and a donation of over $19,000 in materials for the homes.
“We are so pleased be able to donate the cabinets, countertops, knobs and pulls and the installation of both kitchens, as well as light fixtures, for both homes,” said Nancy Fournier, managing owner of Northern Living Kitchen & Bath Ltd. “We had some ideas that made the kitchens more functional, but not more expensive and were happy to provide our design and installation services.”
The staff at Northern Living is comprised of well-educated and well-experienced individuals who live and breathe the northern cottage country lifestyle. Their passion has translated into hundreds of satisfied home and cottage owners and continued referrals from the best architects and custom home builders.
Serving clients throughout Muskoka and Parry Sound since 2005, Northern Living has grown beyond exclusively offering custom kitchen and bathroom renovations to incorporate custom cabinetry and turnkey style services for any room in any home. Their desire to give back to the local community led to their support of Habitat for Humanity’s affordable homeownership program.
“We are grateful for the exceptional donation from Nancy, Jason and the entire team at Northern Living,” said Kimberley Woodcock, HFHOGN CEO. “The support of local businesses and local expertise are critical to the success of our homeownership program and our build projects. Kitchens and cabinetry are a significant cost of a home. Northern Living has truly assisted two families in creating strength, stability and self-reliance.”
Two local families have been selected for the Habitat for Humanity homeownership program and will move into their new homes this November. The Anderson family and the Norrie family were pleased to take part in selecting the finishes for their kitchens and are excited to take their first steps toward homeownership.
People living in Habitat homes not only help build their own houses, they also pay affordable mortgages. Habitat for Humanity’s innovative approach helps working families on a new path to better, affordable living conditions that lead to improved health and stronger childhood development. Access to affordable home ownership can help decrease a family’s reliance on food banks and allow them to move out of social housing which frees up space for those on waiting lists.
Donations of cash and materials, along with mortgage payments from other Habitat for Humanity partner families, are key components in funding local build projects. Support from corporate partnerships and individual donations have been integral to the completion of the Addie St. homes.
