Volunteers, Sponsors, and Dignitaries Gathered at Station Road in Emsdale to begin Construction
The Habitat for Humanity family is growing again. Just weeks after moving two families into their new Huntsville homes, the not-for-profit homebuilder has broken ground in Emsdale as the official kick-off to the South Almaguin Adopt-a-Home project.
The groundbreaking ceremony marked the culmination of many months of work fundraising and hours of community hall meetings. The donated lot on Station Road, just minutes from Hwy. 11, sparked a group of committed volunteers and donations from the generous community. To date, over $25,000 has been raised and an additional $75,000 pledged in gift-in-kind support from local businesses.
“We wanted to build local, and we knew we could count on the support of the community here in South Almaguin and the surrounding area,” said volunteer build chair Myles Donahue. “This project will help a local family start a rewarding life in our community, and it starts today.”
Habitat for Humanity’s goal of building homes alongside 17 families in 2017 takes another step as construction will now begin with the excavation of the lot in Emsdale. Township of Perry Mayor Norm Hofstetter drove a shovel into the ground and addressed the crowd saying “we’re more than ready to get this build going. I thank all of you who made it happen.”
“The Township of Perry and all of the sponsors and volunteers represented here today are the driving force behind this build,” said Habitat Director of Development and Communications Britta Gerwin. “We’re in awe and so grateful of the work, dedication, and commitment you’ve made to the improvement your community and the lives of a local family. This is what Habitat for Humanity is all about.”
